In Japanese, teru (照る) means “to shine” and bōzu (坊主) refers to a Buddhist monk. These traditional handmade dolls, crafted from white paper or cloth, have been part of Japanese culture for centuries.

Traditionally hung outside doors or from window sills, Teru Teru Bōzu are believed to ward off rain and invite sunny weather. Hang one upright to keep the rain away, or upside down to encourage it. The practice began with Japanese farmers as a way to hope for clear skies during planting and harvest.

The charming little “white ghost” gained popularity during the Edo period, with origins possibly tracing back to China in the Heian Period. Today, Teru Teru Bōzu are still a beloved cultural symbol - a simple, handmade wish for sunshine.
